For many, August 10th is already here and lions are being celebrated around the globe on this very special day. August 10th, 2015 marks World Lion Day, a day quite literally dedicated to the celebration of lions. Across the world, thousands (hopefully millions) are celebrating lions and the amazing work being done to save this magnificent species.
Our only hope on this day is that everyone will help to raise awareness about the threats facing Africa's lions -- and lions around the globe -- by using their voice to speak up for the voiceless. With the death of Cecil the Lion has come a global outcry for the abolishment of trophy hunting and the ceasure of other exploitative industries which quite literally devastate wild lion populations on a daily basis. Let us not forget, however, all of the captive lions which have been bred and raised in cages for frivolous human entertainment like cub-petting & lion walking.
Remember: Celebrating lions on #WorldLionDay does not mean petting, cuddling or walking with them. Nor does it mean killing them for trophy.
It is recommended that, if you are going to donate to organizations, charities. etc. on World Lion Day, you send your well-earned funds to legitimate, registered charities. Please see our previous post on how to donate in order to help save lions & wildlife.
Keep in mind that unregistered charities/orgs/funds that have popped up or have been created within weeks of Cecil's death may simply be seeking to profit from the media frenzy surrounding the Cecil situation. Be wary and always donate to legit, transparent orgs.
Happy World Lion Day!
